The Gut-Brain Axis

Did you know that anxiety may be linked to the imbalance of gut microbiota? Gut microbiota (the trillions of microorganisms in the gut) can help regulate brain function through something called the "Gut-Brain Axis." The Gut-Brain Axis is a two directional communication network that links the enteric (gut) and central nervous systems. The autonomic nervous system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and nerves within the gastrointestinal tract, all link the gut and the brain, allowing the brain to influence intestinal activities, and the gut to influence mood, cognition, and mental health. The health and balance of the gut microbiota has a significant influence over our mood and emotional equilibrium. Disruptions of gut microbes have been connected to anxiety and depression.
